Friday – Kettlebell Swings

joe-kb-swing

Change of plans for Saturday. The inspector came today and although most everything passes, there are a few building issues that the owner needs to take care of before we can get our Certificate of Occupancy (CO). We need the CO before we can formally gather in the space. The gathering for Saturday has to be cancelled until we get the CO.

Here is the scoop:

On Saturday we need volunteers to help us move equipment from the Market Street space to the new space. The more the merrier. We will start at 9am and if we have 8 – 10 folks we can be done within two hours or so. Andy and Seth will have trucks/suburbans to help shuffle loads. We’ll need a good size crew to go to Market Street to load the trucks and a good size crew to be at Salem Ave to accept the loads.

We will plan on everyone who has written their name on the chalk board to be there as part of the work crew. If you can’t make it, please let us know.

We will meet at 310 Salem Avenue on Saturday at 9am to organize and go from there. The building is across from the Transportation Museum and beside Roanoke Glass (our signs won’t be installed until Tuesday). Parking is available on Salem Ave, 4th Street and the Roanoke City parking lot beside the Landmark Building on Salem Ave.

Stay tuned for updates. As soon as we get the CO, we will organize a celebration! Remember that we are closed on Monday. Please check the blog and facebook before Tuesday evening classes. We will be posting our status at that time.

Weekend Celebration!

IMG_0075

Stall mats arrived this past week – 56 of them!

Update: We will be closed Labor Day and will host our first classes at 310 Salem Avenue on Tuesday, September 7th.

We are planning a big day this Saturday and we hope you can join us! Students are invited to a Brickhouse Family All Hands Meeting and work day on Saturday, September 4th at 9am (promptly). Not only is our space expanding but our business model is too! We can’t wait to share all the juicy details with you on the 4th.

We’ll grill out a Paleo lunch and would love for you to bring food to slap on the grill (meat and veggies please). Our task list includes painting the official BHC barn doors, moving existing equipment and any final touches that need to be made. We have a fun day planned with lots of surprises that you aren’t going to want to miss!

We are in need of a couple of trucks for the move and a grill for the chow. If you can help with either of these let us know by putting your name on the chalk board this week during one of your classes.

This is crunch week for us! Jay will be taking the 9am class most mornings while Amanda buries herself in paint, stall mats and motor oil (don’t ask). If you have any time during the day Monday – Friday, stop on in and get your hands dirty!

Until then, the party begins Saturday, September 4th at 9am. See you there!

CrossFit is training for life

jay-ceiling

Reminder: Tonight @ 7:30 Coach Neal and Amanda will be hosting an informal 5K Challenge Kickoff at BHC. Children are welcome. The first group run/training will be Saturday morning at 9am! Everyone that can will meet out in front of the new space – 310 Salem Ave. We are the building right beside Roanoke Glass. There is tons of parking available starting at 4th Street and up right there on Salem.

Life is like a CrossFit WOD. Sometimes we get to do the things we are good at and enjoy, and sometimes we have to do the things that we are not at all good at … things way outside of our comfort zone. The key is that whatever we are presented with, we have to at least attempt. It is what it is. We read the WOD and immediately surrender to the now and fully accept the task ahead.

And as such, CrossFit is great training for life. Show me a person that can do 7 sets of 20 kettlebell swings while jumping rope in between and I’ll show you someone that can better handle a micromanaging boss. A person that can better handle financial stress or the stress of being a parent.

Take Amanda for instance. She WOWed me the other day. Everything is on a super tight timeline. Our insurance cuts over to the new location in less than 3 weeks. So we’ll need to have a Certificate of Occupancy from the city by then to hold classes. Which means that the space must pass a tight inspection for it to be rezoned as Health and Fitness. Which means that a MOUNTAIN of work has to be done between now and then. Work done by several different people of different trades. Electrical, construction, painting, etc. On top of that, we need our equipment assembled and flooring in place. This stuff doesn’t happen at the drop of a hat! So she has developed the vision of this place, designed everything, and is coordinating all of the work (as well as doing lots of the work herself). Of course she has current CrossFit classes to coach, as well as dance classes to teach and choreograph in her other business. Did I mention her son is starting 1st grade at a new school on Monday?

So we were discussing task lists the other day and she describes how the different parts of the space need to be painted in a certain order based on color. Why I ask …. “because it will save us money on paint rollers and trays”. WOW. How she holds all of this information in her mind and manages the stress I’ll never know. I do know I’m one lucky man for having her in life and business.

Anyway, not sure where this post is going. Today’s WOD is going to be brutal. Surrender, accept, and enjoy!!!

Wednesday – Kettlebell Swings

web

Meet Coach Neal
Neal joined our team several weeks ago and has been conniving a plan to turn us all into runners. I’m pretty darned convinced that he can and to our benefit. Meet Coach Neal and learn why he is so passionate about running.

What do you do?

My career has me sitting behind a computer all day long as part of a team responsible for keeping a major company up and running. It’s a great job, but that’s all I want to say about that.  As a runner, I strive to be the best runner I can be while helping, motivating, and inspiring others.  I have people say things to me like, “I can’t believe you’ve run 100 miles at a time, that makes me feel like such a whimp.”  But that’s not why I do it! If my running 100 miles motivates or inspires someone else to run around the block, or if I can use my thousands of miles of racing experience to help someone run a more effiicient 800m or a faster 5K, then I have done my job.

How long have you been running?

I ran track in middle school (way back then we called it “Junior High”) but that was only short distance.  Then I quit running for a few years, until the college “freshman fifteen” caught up with me, and I found myself getting fat.  I got into “jogging” as a way to get fit. Soon I found myself really getting into it.  Thats’ when I became a true runner.  I moved up to Washington DC for an internship, and there I discovered the joy of road racing.  I ran my first 5 mile race that year, then less than a year later I was running my first marathon, the 1990 Marine Corps Marathon — 20 years ago this year.

Where is your favorite place to run?

I do most of my running these days in and around downtown Roanoke on my lunch hour, or on the mountain trails surrounding our great city.  My favorite place to run is either smack dab in the middle of downtown (hill repeats on the MLK footbridge just a few blocks from Brickhouse), or on the trails of Mill Mountain, less than 2 miles from downtown.  I do most of my long runs on the Appalachian Trail somewhere between Catawba and Daleville, or on some of the other nearby mountains.

Why do you run?

It keeps me from losing my mind.  Seriously.  I’ve had a few injuries and health issues over the past decade that have forced me to stop running for short periods of time.  Those have been tough times.  People who know me will tell you, running is my drug.  It keeps me healthy.  It gives me something to talk about.  It keeps me happy.  It gives me an excuse when part of me just wants a couple hot dogs with fries.  I also really get a thrill from helping others with running.  Occasionally I have people tell me that one of my books has motivated them to become ultrarunners.  Sure, that makes me happy.  But when I learn that someone ran their first mile because of something I said, wrote, or did?  That makes my day!  That keeps me going.

5K Challenge Update!

The Kickoff Meeting for the 5k Challenge is scheduled for this Friday @ 7:30pm sharp at Brickhouse CrossFit on Market St. We hope that everyone can join us for this casual introduction to Neal and the 5k Challenge!

If you can’t make it but you’d like to participate in the Challenge please comment below and let us know you plan to get involved. We’ll make sure you get all the details you need to get started! We need to have a firm count by Friday.

The Challenge fee of $100 will be collected Friday evening or you can make arrangements to pay this week during one of your classes.

And…if you are ready join the challenge go ahead and register with the BHC team right now! Brickhouse CrossFit Jingle Bell Run Team

Here are some more details straight from Coach Neal:

For most of the runners, I suspect we will start with a 4 week base building period. This will involve 3-4 runs per week.  Training days are negotiable (we’ll do what works best for the most folks) and attendance is not necessary as long as everyone is running.  I’ll be checking in with everyone a couple times per week to monitor progress.

Once we get into the countdown training, there will be three training runs per
week.  It would be ideal if we could meet in person for these.  Mon, Thu, Sat is also ideal.  For these we would most likely want to meet along the greenway somewhere so we can do measured repeats.  Again, attendance is not required, but highly recommended if for no other reason than to allow us to get to know each other and to allow me to closely monitor everyone’s progress.

As for this first Saturday, that will just be a group run… a chance for
me to get to know anyone who attends, talk more about running, and see
where we all stand.
